Thousands of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers who have been forced to seek housing outside military barracks due to an acute shortage are set to benefit from a new accommodation facility set to be built.
The Chief of the Defence Forces General Charles Kahariri led the groundbreaking ceremony for the new accomodotion facilities for the officers on Thursday January 8 in Karen, nairobi.
The ceremony was presided over by General Kahariri, signalling a major milestone in efforts to improve military welfare, as the project seeks to bridge a significant shortfall of about 59,200 housing units within Kenya’s defence infrastructure nationwide.
This shortage has historically forced officers to seek accommodation outside barracks, often leading to mental distress and lowered morale.
The Karen facility will feature modern residential units built to contemporary standards, complete with supporting amenities designed to create a conducive living environment.
Construction is scheduled for completion within one year, promising to enhance officer welfare and boost operational readiness.
General Kahariri commended all stakeholders involved and urged the contractor to strictly adhere to approved timelines, quality standards, and safety requirements throughout the construction period.
“This project reflects the power of collective effort, and I commend all stakeholders for their commitment. I urge the contractor to strictly adhere to the approved timelines, uphold the highest quality standards, and prioritize safety at every stage of construction to ensure successful and timely delivery,” stated General Kahariri.
The project is part of a broader KDF housing programme being implemented nationwide through a Public-Private Partnership model.
Currently, the government is constructing3,069 modern units across key military installations, including 500 units in Roysambu, 952 in Nakuru's Lanet, and 788 in Laikipia's Kwa Mbuzi.
In June 2025, the government enhanced the initiative by setting aside 20 per cent of all Affordable Housing Programme units for members of the disciplined forces.
Officers can now access home loans at interest rates as low as 3 per cent per year for social housing and 6 per cent for affordable housing.
The initiative forms part of a broader KDFhousing programme being implemented across the countryto improve service delivery and strengthen the welfare of military personnel.
