KNEC Launches Free Online CBA Training Portal for Senior School Teachers

Teachers across Kenya now have the opportunity to upskill themselves on modern assessment methods at no cost, thanks to a new initiative by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

KNEC has opened a free online training portal specifically designed for senior school teachers who want to master Competency-Based Assessment techniques.

The self-paced programme is accessible through the KNEC portal, where educators can register and begin their learning journey immediately.

Registration requires teachers to visit the portal, click the sign-up button, and complete their profile by filling in all fields marked with red asterisks before clicking register.

The training covers critical areas including assessment design and blueprintingaligned to CBC outcomes, item writing and test development, rubric construction and moderation, and portfolio management for continuous school-based assessment.

Teachers will also learn about psychometrics and quality assurance, focusing on reliability, validity, and standardisation of marking across different assessment contexts.

Digital assessment tools and Learning Management System use, including data capture and feedback workflows, form another key component of thecomprehensive training programme offered by KNEC.

The course follows a sequential structure where participants must complete one unit entirely before the system allows them to proceed to the next module.

Upon successful completion, teachers receive a KNEC CBA micro-credential indicating module coverage in design, item writing, rubrics, portfolios, quality assurance, and digital tools usage.

The credential is intended to standardise practice nationally and align with school-level quality assurance and reporting formats introduced in the senior school CBA rollout across the country.

Optional in-person reinforcement is available through county Assessment Hubs and the Education Assessment Resource Centre at New Mitihani House in South C, Nairobi.
