Murkomen Threatens to Sack Police Officers Captured in Viral CCTV Assault Footage

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has warned that police officers shown on CCTV beating young men at a Nandi Hills pool hall will face dismissal, promising rapid action against what he termed as barbaric conduct by the involved officers.

Speaking in Mombasa County on Friday, after a consultative security meeting with MPs from all six Coastal counties, Murkomen said Inspector General Douglas Kanja had ordered the Internal Affairs Unit to investigate the incident thoroughly.

“The issue of police brutality, particularly the video that we have seen from Nandi Hills, is barbaric, unconstitutional, and unlawful. We will not protect police officers engaged in such outrageous acts,” Murkomen said.

He confirmed that investigators from the Internal Affairs Unit would determine culpability, warning that officers found guilty would be apprehended, charged, and lose their jobs.

“The police officers who will be found guilty after investigations will be apprehended and charged, and I can assure you they will also lose their jobs. The question of police brutality is one we must deal with firmly,” he added.

The crackdown follows an eight-minute CCTV video, timestamped January 10, 2026, showing uniformed officers entering a Nandi Hills pool hall, forcing about a dozen young men to the floor, and assaulting them with batons while demanding identification.

The footage further shows tensions flaring after one man tried to exit the premises, prompting officers to unleash a barrage of blows on him and several others as the situation spiralled out of control.

At the same time, on Friday, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) announced the start of investigations after the video went viral on social media and sparked widespread condemnation from the public.

IPOAdeployed a Rapid Investigations Team to Nandi Hills early Friday, tasked with establishing the sequence of events, assessing officer conduct, and identifying victims and witnesses for statements.

The authority noted that multiple establishments, including bars and hotels in Nandi Hills, were affected and urged calm as investigations continue, condemning any unwarranted use of force by police.

Additionally, IG Kanja issaid to have personally reviewed the footageand instructed the Internal Affairs Unit to conclude its investigation within three days, pledging accountability for any officers found culpable.

National Police Service spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga reiterated that the service will be committed to transparency and professionalism in resolving the matter and will be working closely with independent institutions to ensure justice.
