Mike Gitonga, the familiar face and voice at presidential events as the official emcee to the President, found himself in an unusual and tense encounter over the weekend.
The Secretary of State Functions came face-to-face with a seemingly intoxicated driver on the road, sparking a confrontation that quickly turned into a dialogue laced with humour and unexpected wisdom.
The incident occurred after Gitonga was nearly forced off the road by the man, who was driving a Ford Ranger Raptor double-cab pickup, while Gitonga was heading home.
At the time of the incident, the man appeared to be on the wrong side of the road, with Gitonga approaching from the left side with his BMW GS motorbike.
“Why are you forcing me into the ditch? Why not flash a sign to tell me to keep my lights low? Is throwing me into the ditch the solution?” Gitonga asked the man, trying to reason with him.
What followed was a long, unusual exchange between two motorists, one sober, the other seemingly under the influence, both forced to stay calm in the standoff.
However, when Gitonga further pressured the man, he denied being under the influence and slammed the president's man for bullying him just because he owned a BMW.
“That’s how you BMW guys behave. I’m not under the influence. Because you own a BMW now, you think you are Jesus,” the driver shot back.
At one point, Gitonga even turned preacher, reciting John 3:16 while urging the man to reflect on his actions.
Gitonga, unbothered, responded, “I’m not Jesus. Jesus did not have a BMW, so I don’t think I am.” The argument continued with the intoxicated man insisting, “Just because you have money, do not show us. In heaven, there will be no BMWs. I do not have a Bible, but you are pushing us.”
The unusual exchange eventually ended on a lighter note, with the two men exchanging names and pleasantries before parting ways safely.
Gitonga is aformerKTN Newsanchor and served as Communication Director to the First Lady, Rachel Ruto, before being appointed byPresident Ruto as Secretary of State for Functionsin January 2023.
He has a Degree in Electrical Engineering from Nottingham University in the United Kingdom, which he obtained after leaving France due to a communication barrier.
