Medical services at Transmara West Sub-County Hospital in Kilgoris have been severely disrupted after hospital management abruptly shut down the facility following a violent attack on health workers.
The hospital was closed after armed attackers stormed the facility on Tuesday night, assaulting nurses and leaving several health workers with injuries.
According to hospital staff who spoke on condition of anonymity, the attackers arrived at the hospital with a patient who had been involved in a road accident.
The situation reportedly escalated after medical staff advised that the patient be referred to a mission hospital due to the severity of the injuries.
This recommendation angered the group accompanying the patient, triggering chaos within the hospital compound.
During the confrontation, nurses on duty were attacked, beaten, and left with serious bodily injuries, forcing hospital authorities to suspend services over safety concerns.
By Wednesday morning, patients arriving at the facility found the gates closed, leaving many stranded without access to urgent medical care.
Mary Agnes, a resident of Lolgorian, said she had been referred to the hospital for a scan but was shocked to find it shut.
“This is the hospital we depend on. Now it is closed, and we don’t know where to seek help,” Agnes said.
“I brought my child for treatment and found the hospital closed. I don’t know where else to take my child,” said one distressed parent.
Another patient said he had come for an X-ray after breaking his leg, only to discover that the hospital was not operational, as calls grow for authorities to restore services and improve security at the facility.
This attack on healthcare practitioners comes weeks after theInterior CS, Kipchumba Murkomen, declared Transmara West as a security-disturbedregion and deployed security personnel to the region.
