The Uganda Communications Commission has ordered a temporary shutdown of public internet access and selected mobile services from 6pm on January 13, 2026, during the election period.
The directive issued on Tuesday affects public internet access, SIM card sales and registration, and outbound data roaming, with exemptions granted to essential services such as healthcare, banking, and government systems.
“Following a strong recommendation from the Inter-Agency Security Committee, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) duly directs all licensed Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to implement a temporary suspension of the following services,” the directive read in part.
“This measure is necessary to mitigate the rapid spread of online misinformation, disinformation, electoral fraud and related risks, as well as preventing of incitement of unrest that could affect public confidence and national security during the election period.”
